Grant to fund program for high school seniors

Onslow County Schools has received a grant that will help prepare high school students for balancing budgets and managing credit as they head to college or into the workforce.

Discover Financial Services has awarded the school system a $36,740 grant to enhance financial education at each of the district’s seven high schools, reaching approximately 650 students.

The grant is part of Discover’s Pathway to Financial Success program, a 5-year commitment to bring financial education curriculum into public high schools across the country, Discover recently announced.

Madeline Tucker, Onslow County Schools Career and Technical Education Curriculum Coordinator, said the grants funds are being used to purchase the Foundations in Personal Finance curriculum established by Dave Ramsey, a personal money-management expert and national radio personality.

Tucker said the school district received a $10,000 donation last year from a private benefactor that allowed them to purchase a limited amount of the curriculum. The Discover grant allows the school district to provide the Dave Ramsey curriculum for each of the high schools.

“We’ll be able to buy instructional materials to enhance and provide additional opportunities to ensure our students are financially literate,” Tucker said.

The school district has ordered the materials and they should be available for use beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.

Tucker said classes in personal finance and principles of business and finance are courses currently offered through the school district’s Career and Technical Education program. Students also receive some financial basics through some civics classes.

Tucker said they want graduates to be college and career-ready, and that includes knowing how to manage debt and finances so they build a strong financial future.
